Ms. Santomero is Creator, Executive Producer and Head Writer of Super WHY!, the first preschool property that helps build literacy skills through a groundbreaking approach to reading education, classic fairytales with an innovative twist and empowering young heroes. PBS KIDS made a 65-episode initial commitment to the animated series, which launched in September 2007 to critical acclaim, and the progressive, multi-platform program received a prestigious Ready to Learn Grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the U.S. Department of Education.
Ms. Santomero and Out of the Blue were tapped to produce and direct the second season and third season of PBS KIDS’ popular preschool programming block, featuring Miss Lori, Miss Rosa and Hooper. She is currently in development on other exciting original projects for Out of the Blue as well.
For more than a decade, Ms. Santomero has been the Co-Creator, Executive Producer and Head Writer for Nick Jr.’s landmark series, Blue’s Clues. Her ability to integrate education, entertainment and active participation helped make Blue’s Clues a breakthrough educational program. She designed and spearheaded the landmark research and curriculum plan for Blue’s Clues, forever changing the way in which preschoolers watch television by presenting them with a unique, challenging program that enables them to learn through play.
Ms. Santomero’s vast accomplishments include leading the production and development of numerous Emmy nominated episodes for Blue’s Clues; a full-length feature called Blue’s Big Musical Movie; educational Blue’s Clues CD-Roms and Blue’s Clues books for Simon & Schuster. In addition, she wrote two Blue’s Clues theatrical productions, which played at Radio City Music Hall in New York City as well as venues across the nation.
Ms. Santomero began her career at Nickelodeon in the research department, educating executives, producers and writers on specifics of child development. During the conception of Nick Jr., Ms. Santomero also served as content manager for the block’s initial programs Allegra’s Window and Gullah Gullah Island. Later, Angela helped Nick Jr.’s creative team extend the Bill Cosby book series, Little Bill, into stories that would meet the social and emotional needs of young children through the medium of television.
At Out of the Blue, Ms. Santomero has continued her ongoing relationship with Nickelodeon, most recently creating, writing and developing the ten episode puppet spinoff of Blue’s Room and an hour-long prime-time special, “Meet Blue’s Baby Brother” for Nick Jr.
Ms. Santomero received a Master’s degree in Child Developmental and Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University and a B.A. from Catholic University. She has appeared on several high profile and well respected media programs, including NBC’s Today, the Rosie O’Donnell Show and CNN. She was named one of the “Next Wave of Women 2007” by Broadcasting & Cable. Angela C. Samantha Freeman is a Founding Partner of Out of the Blue Enterprises LLC. As a CEO, Ms. Freeman oversees production, finance, marketing, operations and licensing for Out of the Blue. In addition she co-creates all new business concepts for the company, with a mission to change the landscape of children’s entertainment one property at a time. Under her guidance, Out of the Blue handles a broad spectrum of work, including television production and complete branding and merchandising development for new as well as established properties.Read More
Ms. Freeman is Co-Creator and Executive Producer of Super WHY!, the company’s first original television series, which premiered to critical acclaim on PBS KIDS in Fall 2007. Super WHY! is the only preschool superhero property that boosts literacy skills through interactive fairytale adventures that encourage young viewers to participate in learning through entertaining and engaging games. Ms. Freeman oversees the marketing and promotion for the Super WHY! brand and heads the Super WHY! licensing and merchandising business. She is Executive Producer of the Super WHY! Reading Camps community outreach program and of the newly-launched and award-winning Super WHY! website, a learning-rich online destination that extends the message of the show through innovative interactive games and activities.
Ms. Freeman has a history of creating and developing successful brands and businesses over the last 15 years, with extensive experience in the arenas of business strategy, brans development and management, website production, and advertising and promotion.
Upon her arrive at Nickelodeon in 1997, Ms. Freeman played an active role in building the company's Consumer Products department into a $3 billion business. As Vice President of Hard Goods, and then of Soft Goods, Mr. Freeman oversaw licensing, product development and account management for Nickelodeon's toy, gift, stationary, apparel, accessory, home and packaged good categories for a wide range of properties, including Dora the Explorer, Rugrats, Blue's Clues and Spongebob Squarepants. Licensing revenues more than tripled under her domain.
While Vice President, New Business Development for Nickelodeon Consumer Products, Ms. Freeman was responsible for the development of new licensing initiatives, including products based on the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. Brands; adult product programs for sister networks Comedy Central, Spike and Noggin; outside property representation such as Holly Hobbie; and original consumer products-led properties that targeted new categories and demographics. Under Ms. Freeman's leadership, everGirl, a web-based lifestyle brand for girls that became a top-selling pre-teen fashion brand at Kohls, its exclusive retail home.
Prior to Nickelodeon, Mr. Freeman spent several years in the toy business. She was Director of Marketing at Toy Biz, a division of Marvel Enterprises, where she managed the action figure business for a variety of Marvel properties, including Spider-man, X-Men and Hulk. She also served as Product Manager at Mattel toys, developing and marketing Barbie dolls, fashions & accessories. Early in her career, Ms. Freeman worked in the gift industry as a Product Development Manager for Papel Freelance, a division of Russ Berrie, where she created and managed over 500 gift and novelty products.
Ms. Freeman received an M.B.A. From Harvard Business School and a B.A. From Tufts University. She has been quoted in numerous industry publications including, Brandweek, Toy Book and Women's Wear Daily and was named one of the “40 under 40” in License Magazine as well as one of the “Next Wave of Women 2007” by Broadcasting & Cable.
